Blueberries and groceries

June 2nd, 2006 at 02:03 am

Wow - did I learn alot about grocery shopping this past month. We were spending $1000 - 1200 a month! UGH!! Now there are 9 of us, most eat like adults and a big dog - but come on that's a TON of money. So my goal was to cut that down to $600 and I came in under that. Smile WOOHOO!! A little over $500 actually. We haven't changed anything that we are eating - and honestly I haven't tried a ton of scratch cooking yet - that's june's goal. Smile
I didn't clip any coupons - well I take that back - I did clip them just forget to take them to the store.......... So they haven't done me any good. Frown
One thing I really want to learn to make is an awesome homemade pizza - that's our weakness. Ordering pizza on the weekends Frown
I planned menus, made a list and shopped. That's it honestly! I kept track of every penny that we spent.
We also went blueberry picking at a u pick farm - what fun!! Oh my - if you ever get a chance to do it - try it! We picked 27 1/2 lbs of blueberries - they were $1 a lb so I spetn 27.50 and added that into our grocery spending. We obviously won't eat them all this month. But it's stockpiling - little by little.
Considering going strawberry picking later in June - 50cents a lb. Just need to find time to do it. Smile
So now it's time to look for those blueberry recipes also. Smile

I picked blueberries like that once when I was in high school. Ugh. We had to go before light, on a muggy day, and the bushes were at the height I couldn't stand or sit, just crouch. Never again.

Now I worked at a U-pick strawberry place all summers when I went to college. Now there you could sit and pick - much better. Of course right now I like my choice of fruit - mulberries - free off a tree in the back yard. It just happened to be there when I bought the house.

Berries are a particular favorite of mine. Pick, pack and snack. Hope you are making plenty of jams and preserves too Smile

Look up a recipe for blueberry scones. So easy, and makes a great snack or easy breakfast (toasted). You can even freeze them..

Interesting blog you've got here Smile
